Australia's Top Decorated Soldier Charged with Afghan War Crimes, Granted Bail
1 min read
Australia's most decorated living veteran, a former special forces soldier, has been granted bail after being charged with committing war crimes during his service in Afghanistan. The 41-year-old man, whose identity has been suppressed, was arrested on November 17th and charged with a single count of murder related to the 2012 killing of an Afghan man.
The former soldier was granted bail on Monday by a Sydney court, with the judge citing the man's distinguished military service and the likelihood of a lengthy delay before his trial. Prosecutors had opposed bail, arguing the man posed an unacceptable risk of interfering with witnesses. However, the judge determined the risk could be mitigated with strict conditions, including a ban on the former soldier contacting witnesses or accessing the internet.
The charges against the veteran are the first to emerge from a long-running military inquiry into alleged war crimes by Australian special forces in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016. The inquiry has examined the deaths of 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners. The former soldier is the only person charged so far, though military prosecutors have indicated more charges may follow as the investigation continues.
