Renewable Surge Shifts Climate Outlook, But Warming Threat Persists

The rapid global rollout of renewable energy is helping to shift emissions trends, but expected temperature rises remain high as the United Nations moves to tighten countries' climate commitments.

While the most extreme climate change scenarios appear to be fading, the threat of significant global warming continues to loom large. Experts say the accelerated deployment of solar, wind, and other clean power sources has helped to reduce the likelihood of the worst-case projections, which had warned of catastrophic temperature increases by the end of the century.

However, the UN is now pressing nations to strengthen their emissions reduction targets, underscoring that current pledges still fall far short of what is needed to limit warming to the Paris Agreement's goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Continued progress in renewable energy, as well as further cuts in fossil fuel use, will be crucial to curbing the ongoing rise in global temperatures and avoiding the most severe climate impacts.
