Sweden Bolsters Naval Power with $3.5B Frigate Deal
1 min read

Sweden has announced a major investment in its naval defense, signing a $3.5 billion deal with French shipbuilder Naval Group to acquire four new state-of-the-art frigates. The vessels will be the largest surface warships in Sweden's navy, strengthening the country's military capabilities as it rushes to modernize in the wake of its recent NATO accession.
The new frigates, set for delivery starting in 2030, will be based on Naval Group's Belh@rra-class design and equipped with advanced radar, weapons systems, and electronic warfare capabilities. This marks a significant upgrade from Sweden's current fleet, which includes aging Visby-class corvettes and Göteborg-class corvettes.
The move comes as Sweden, a longtime neutral country, has rapidly shifted its defense posture in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As the newest member of NATO, Sweden is working to rapidly build up its military might, with this frigate deal being the latest in a series of major procurement initiatives. The country has also recently ordered new Archer-class artillery systems and Patriot air defense missiles from the United States.
