South African Opposition Leader Sentenced to 5 Years for Firing Rifle at Rally

A South African court has sentenced opposition politician Julius Malema to five years in prison for firing a rifle in the air at a political rally in 2018. Malema, the leader of the left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, was convicted last year for the firearms offense.
The magistrate is currently considering whether to grant Malema's lawyers leave to appeal the sentence. If the appeal is unsuccessful, Malema, whose EFF party is South Africa's fourth-largest political party, could face up to five years behind bars.
The incident occurred at a 2018 EFF rally, where Malema was seen on video firing a rifle into the air. He was later charged and convicted for the firearms offense. Malema's lawyers have argued that the sentence is excessive and plan to challenge the ruling.
The case has drawn significant attention in South Africa, where Malema is a prominent and at times controversial political figure. The EFF has been a vocal critic of the ruling African National Congress party and has advocated for radical economic reforms, including the nationalization of land and mines.
