New Volkswagen T-Roc: Can It Outshine the Golf?
2 min read

Volkswagen's latest medium-sized crossover, the T-Roc, has arrived in the UK with high expectations. The new-generation model has plenty of strengths, but can it really cope with Britain's crumbling roads?
The T-Roc has already received a comprehensive report from Illya Verpraet after its launch in Lisbon last November. In the coming months, an even more detailed review will be published, including economy and performance figures obtained at the Horiba MIRA proving ground.
In the UK, the first-generation T-Roc was a spectacular success between 2017 and 2025, even as its niche became increasingly crowded. In 2026, its chief rivals include the Toyota C-HR, Renault Symbioz, Skoda Karoq, and the latest Nissan Qashqai.
The T-Roc's performance on UK roads is crucial, as the Golf-on-stilts model may struggle with the country's crumbling tarmac, especially in top-spec R-Line trim with 19-inch wheels and thin tire sidewalls. The T-Roc's MQB Evo platform has had hit-and-miss results in terms of ride quality, but the choice of dampers can make a significant difference in its ability to handle poor road conditions. Buyers can opt for either passive or adjustable dampers with selectable rates, which could impact the T-Roc's overall ride quality.
As for the engine lineup, the T-Roc is currently available with Volkswagen's excellent 1.5-litre eTSI mild-hybrid petrol four-cylinder engine, offered in 114 hp or 148 hp tunes. Later this year, additional powertrain options are expected to join the lineup.
The new Volkswagen T-Roc faces a challenging task of standing out in an increasingly crowded market, while also proving its mettle on the UK's notoriously poor roads. Its success will depend on a careful balance of performance, comfort, and value proposition.
