New Volkswagen T-Roc: Can It Unseat the Golf?
2 min read

Volkswagen's new medium-sized crossover, the T-Roc, has arrived in the UK with plenty of strengths, but it faces a crucial test on the country's crumbling roads.
The T-Roc has already received a comprehensive review from Illya Verpraet after its debut in Lisbon last November. In the coming months, an even more detailed assessment will be published, including economy and performance figures obtained at the Horiba MIRA proving ground.
In the meantime, this fresh-off-the-boat report from the UK market provides an early look at the T-Roc's prospects. The first-generation model was a spectacular success in the UK between 2017 and 2025, even as its niche became increasingly crowded. Today, its chief rivals include the Toyota C-HR, Renault Symbioz, Skoda Karoq, and the latest Nissan Qashqai.
The T-Roc's performance on the UK's notoriously poor roads could be a make-or-break factor. Many will be sold in top-spec R-Line trim, potentially equipped with 19-inch wheels and thin tire sidewalls. Volkswagen's MQB Evo platform, which underpins the T-Roc, has had mixed results in terms of ride quality. Buyers can choose between standard passive dampers or adjustable dampers with selectable rates (for an additional £765), so the T-Roc's road manners may vary significantly depending on the specification.
For now, the T-Roc is available with Volkswagen's excellent 1.5-liter eTSI mild-hybrid petrol engine, offered in 114 hp or 148 hp tunes. Later in the year, additional powertrain options are expected to join the lineup.
The new T-Roc faces a crucial test on the UK's crumbling roads, where its ability to deliver a comfortable ride could make or break its chances of unseating the iconic Golf in the affections of British buyers.
