Delhi Aims for All-Electric Two-Wheeler Future by 2028
1 min read

In a bold move to combat urban pollution, the Delhi government has unveiled a draft policy that mandates all new two-wheeler registrations to be electric by 2028. This ambitious plan, if implemented, would make the national capital the first major city in India to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers entirely.
The proposed policy aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Delhi, which currently accounts for the highest number of two-wheelers in the country. By mandating a complete shift to electric two-wheelers over the next six years, the government hopes to significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality in the city.
Experts have welcomed the move, citing the significant environmental benefits of transitioning to EVs. However, the policy's success will depend on the government's ability to address key challenges, such as improving charging infrastructure, providing financial incentives, and ensuring the affordability of electric two-wheelers for consumers.
The draft policy also includes other measures to promote EV adoption, such as setting up battery swapping stations, providing purchase subsidies, and establishing dedicated EV zones. If implemented effectively, this policy could serve as a model for other Indian cities looking to tackle the pressing issue of urban air pollution.
