Delhi Aims for All-Electric Two-Wheeler Future by 2028
2 min read

In a bold move to combat air pollution and promote sustainable transportation, the Delhi government has unveiled a draft electric vehicle (EV) policy that mandates all new two-wheeler registrations to be electric by 2028.
The policy, which is currently open for public feedback, is part of Delhi's broader efforts to transition towards cleaner mobility solutions. By setting a clear deadline for the adoption of electric two-wheelers, the government aims to accelerate the shift away from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and drive the city towards a greener, more sustainable future.
Experts have welcomed the policy, noting that it aligns with global trends and could have a significant impact on reducing emissions in the densely populated capital. Two-wheelers, which account for a significant portion of Delhi's vehicle fleet, are a major contributor to the city's air pollution woes. The proposed mandate is expected to spur investment in EV infrastructure, such as charging stations, and encourage manufacturers to ramp up their electric two-wheeler offerings.
However, the policy's success will depend on the government's ability to address challenges such as the availability of affordable electric models, the development of a robust charging network, and the provision of incentives to encourage consumer adoption. Policymakers will also need to ensure that the transition is inclusive, with measures to support lower-income residents in accessing electric mobility options.
